The Texas Public Utility Commission on Tuesday voted to approve a $3.6 billion request for the purchase of Pepco Energy Networks from Exelon in the first phase of a proposed joint venture over 20 years.
PPEG Energy Holdings L.P. requested the approval earlier in month, which is a process through utilities often request to buy, or license, private companies.
The decision by Texas regulators is a victory for Pepco, which has endured years of cost cuts and management changes by the utility, and a major decision for Exelon, which has been struggling with declining natural gas price rates and the rise of new renewable energy alternatives.
Dive Insight:
Pepco, the owner of largest retail electric grid in the nation with more than 35 million customers in 15 states, is no stranger to the procurement process, as it has requested permission to acquire up six utilities since 2008, and has been denied each time.
Since the purchase of Philadelphia-based Exelon's electric distribution assets in 2011, Pepco has reported an increase in its annual revenue to $18.2 billion.
Texas regulators approved a request for the purchase of Exelon by adding Pepco to the new joint venture that Pepco proposes for transmission utility business with Corpus Christi-based TXU Holdings.
Pepco has also been criticized for its handling of a 2014 cyber-attack that resulted in the leak of customer data on more than 70 million customers, as a result of software vulnerability.
Despite concerns about its recent sales, Pepco CEO Bill Johnson said he is confident enough in the company that price it can command in the state of Texas is not yet a concern.
"In the short term, when you have a deal done — you look at it and say, 'Oh my gosh, it's great for us. Can't believe the price that I can get,' it helps, for sure," he told AP. DALLAS -- A former police academy instructor accused of using cocaine while at the Dallas Police Academy was killed Monday in his patrol car, authorities said.
Earl Terrell Johnson, 43, was driving a rental car when he was struck head-on about 2:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of E. Lakeview Drive in East Dallas.
The officer who was driving a squad car on patrol at the time is "alive, responding and available as he could be"
